The batteries of several vehicles were removed at the facility in First Avenue, Grassy Park.
Belinda Abraham, Communications, Resource Development & Education Manager of the SPCA, says services had to be suspended on Monday.
“In the early hours of Monday morning, five SPCA vehicles including three Mobile Clinics, our Charity Shop collection vehicle and our Education vehicle were vandalised.
“Thieves specifically targeted our Nissan NP300 vehicles, opened the bonnets, causing damage to the latches and removed the batteries damaging the terminals and other auto electric components,” she says.
“They also removed a spare tyre from one of the Mobile Clinics, and broke into the office of our Horse Care Unit and stole computer hardware and other goods. The value of the losses/ damages is in the region of R100 000.”
She says as a result, the SPCA was unable to send out their Mobile Clinics.
“It is infuriating that there is a heartless element within our communities who fail to recognise the importance of our work and who place animal lives and community health on the line for the price a few stolen goods can bring.”
She added security would be beefed up at the facility, but that cost was a factor.
