A Bonteheuwel crèche flooded yesterday after skelms burgled the property and stole copper pipes.
Evelyn Court, the owner of Kiddies Joy crèche, says skelms have targeted the crèche every night over the past week and have stolen gates, the fence and even removed barbed wire.
The crèche is located on the property of the Church of Christ and caters for just over 80 children.
“The break-ins started getting bad in August but in the past week they have hit us every night. They stole the gate and somebody came to my house saying I must go to the scrapyard. We went there and we found our gate, but now we must have it reinstalled,” she says.
Court says on Wednesday night the skurke climbed through a bathroom window and after bending the burglar bars, cut the copper pipes leading to the urinal.
“They cut the pipes and the water started flowing. All the carpets were wet and we spent the morning mopping up the mess left behind,” she says.
“The children can’t even have reading time on the carpets. It is so bad that when we had a new fire door installed we had to ask the fire inspector for special permission to have burglar bars on the outside. It is not allowed because it is an emergency exit.”
Ward Councillor, Angus McKenzie, blames skollies for the break-ins.
“We have progressively reduced shootings and murders by gangsters recently, but now our places of worship have become targets. To think that these varke will steal from churches and kids just proves how dysfunctional they are,” says McKenzie.
He says a request has been made for the neighbourhood watch and Law Enforcement to patrol places of worship in Bontas.
