Traffic chief Kenny Africa said that two cars collided around 6am on Sunday on the N2 near Riversdale, causing four people in one car to be burnt beyond recognition, and one person in the other car to lose their life.
“This is the second head-on collision for the weekend.
"Early on Saturday morning we had one between Rawsonville and Slanghoek.
"The driver of one of the cars died and six other people were seriously injured,” Africa said.
Also on Sunday, around 8am, a pedestrian was knocked down and killed on the N7 near Dunoon.
The province’s Alcohol Blitz stats for the weekend show that 1929 vehicles were stopped at roadblocks, and 1544 drivers were screened for alcohol.
Thirteen people were arrested for drunk driving and two for driving at an excessively high speed.
