The Century City serial killer will spend the rest of his life in jail after being sentenced to seven life sentences yesterday.
Khangayi Sedumedi received an additional 40 years in prison for robbing and raping several women over a four-year period.
In a plea and sentencing agreement at the Western Cape High Court yesterday, he said he committed the crimes because it made him feel better.
Judge President Yahya John Hlophe said: “This is the longest sentence I have ever had to impose in 22 years. I am glad it’s by agreement.”
The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to 21 charges, including eight of rape, four of murder and three of kidnapping.
The State said DNA, as well as cellphone evidence linked him to the crimes.
Sedumedi lured the young women with promises of jobs in order to rape them.
In the lengthy document, he claimed that his mother “disappeared without a trace” when he was 13 years old.
This, he said, caused him to feel lonely and “served as his motivation in that his aforementioned conduct made him feel better”.
He admitted that when he made contact with his victims he did so “with the intent to rape them”.
He killed four of the women so that they could not identify him.
For four years, from 2011 to 2015, Sedumedi accosted seven females, including a 15-year-old girl, and kidnapped, robbed and raped them.
He killed his first victim, who is yet to be identified, in July 2014 near the Wingfield bush in Goodwood.
The other murder victims are Anathi Mali, Nothemba Ndodo and Sinazo Ntlaka.
Sedumedi was arrested on 7 January 2015, the day after Sinazo’s murder, after police discovered her two ATM cards, work clothes and hand cream at his Gugulethu home.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson for the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, says they were happy with the sentence.
“We hope the families will find some closure after this sentence. It’s a wound that will not be able to heal, but we did all we could to ensure a long sentence,” he says.
