A Cape Flats primary school caretaker has been arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old schoolgirl.
The family contacted police after the meisie told her ouma she had been sexually assaulted at school.
Neither the suspect nor the school can be named to protect the identity of the child.
According to her family, the little girl has been raped several times over the past few months.
A 30-year-old community member claims the janitor is being “protected” because his sister is also employed at the school.
“The principal just wants to sweep everything under the carpet as he has done all these years. Our children go to school and we think they are safe in an environment where adults watch over them. This girl was robbed of her innocence,” the angry mother.
The child’s mom told the Cape Times: “We live in [one area], and my daughter goes to school in [another area]. She stays with my mother during the week. After I was told, we immediately went to the police station and then we went to the hospital.”
A doctor examined her daughter and confirmed she had been sexually assaulted as she showed physical signs of abuse, the mother said.
“The police came to me and we went to the school where they arrested the man that did this to my child.
“She seems fine now, but I don’t know for sure,” said the mother.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed the case.
Education Department spokesperson Millicent Merton said: “The school and the department are dealing with the alleged incident in line with our Abuse No More Policy, which provides guidelines on how to deal with abuse of any kind, in line with legislation.”
