About 30 residents burned tyres and blocked Robert Sobukwe Road between Bonteheuwel and Kreefgat on Saturday.
Residents tell the Daily Voice the reason for their violent protest was because they feel it was the “only way” their pleas for assistance would be heard.
Tall trees in the area damaged the electrical wires when the storm hit Cape Town last Wednesday and their power went out.
Mom of four, Shariefa Davids, 38, says she has had the worst time as her two youngest have chest infections and she couldn’t even put the kettle on to make them a bottle.
“Nobody cares if we suffer. Everybody called and went to the [municipal] office,” the mom says.
She says luckily someone heard their cries for help.
“I think the ward councillor finally did something because our lights went on late on Saturday afternoon. ` n Mens moet eerste tyres brand en afbreek voor iets gedoen word hier,” said the upset mother.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirms the obstruction caused by the residents.
“This office can confirm that a service delivery related protest action was policed in Robert Sobukwe [Road] on Saturday morning when a group of about 30 people blocked the road. Action was taken and law and order was maintained. No one has been arrested,” says Traut.
The City of Cape Town said more than 40 000 consumers were left in the dark following the storm which claimed the lives of five people.
