Police celebrate biggest drug haul at airport

In what is being called the biggest drug bust ever at Cape Town International Airport, a woman from Johannesburg has been arrested after tik worth over R5 million was discovered in her suitcase.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the 26-year-old from Wanderers in Joburg had been on a flight from East London and landed in Cape Town at 9.40pm on Wednesday night.

Border police based at the airport conducted random stop and searches.

They stopped the woman after she had collected her luggage.

“When searching the suitcase of the woman, they found numerous parcels wrapped in tin foil and further examination led to the discovery of tik with an estimated street value of R5.4 million, which was promptly seized,” Van Wyk said.

The Station Commander at the Cape Town International Airport SAPS, Colonel Anton Olivier, commended the members of the Border Police for their vigilance and a job well done in seizing the large consignment of drugs.

The woman is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Priority Crimes Court on Friday. She will be charged with dealing in drugs.

Cape Town International Airport has seen more than 200 drug busts since last year, with three of the biggest hauls, amounting to a total of R4.2 million, this year taking place in May.
