Two men were arrested for possession of drugs in the massive drug haul.
Cops attached to the Public Order Policing Unit (POP) conducted search operations in Lavender Hill, which led them to a house in Hillview.
While searching the backyard, they found a steel trunk containing 8990 mandrax tablets.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed the seizure, adding police will not stop clamping down on the scourge of drugs on the streets.
Traut says: “Eager to address the root causes of crime, members of the Public Order Policing Unit conducted an operation at a residence in Hillview, Lavender Hill, on Sunday evening in search of drugs.
“The search led police to the backyard where a steel trunk buried in the ground was found comprising of 8990 mandrax tablets with a street value of R 475 000.
“Two suspects, aged 28 and 54, were arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs and are due to make a court appearance in Muizenberg Court [today].”
