Police have made a breakthrough in the murder of a well-known Mitchells Plain pub owner.
Cops say the suspected killer of Calvin Goliath was nabbed after a tip-off from the public, three days after the armed robbery.
Goliath, 65, was gunned down outside his businesses, the Premium Sports Bar and Dagbreek Liquors in Westridge, last week Thursday.
Police arrested the suspect on Saturday and also seized a VW Golf MK2, which they believe was used during the murder.
Top police sources reveal the breakthrough came after an intense investigation, which led to a member of the public identifying the alleged killer to cops.
“This person told police who is responsible for the shooting of the pub owner on Thursday,” the source says.
“The information provided led to detectives arresting the suspect and the vehicle was recovered.”
The suspect is expected to make his first appearance today at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Cops are now hunting for two other suspects and the murder weapon.
Calvin was about to open his liquor store at 8am, and was still sitting in his car when he came under attack.
Two armed men pulled him out of his car and tried to rob him.
One of the robbers shot him once in the chest.
A motorist who saw Goliath being robbed took out his own firearm and a shootout ensued, but the suspects fled in a red VW Golf (jumbo) MK2.
Calvin’s daughter-in-law, who also works at the pub, found him on the pavement.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirms the arrest: “We can confirm that one of the suspects linked to the said murder was arrested.
“The vehicle connected to the murder was also seized.”
Meanwhile, Calvin’s son, William Goliath, 31, who confirmed his father’s wallet was missing, says they are pleased police have a suspect behind bars.
He says they do not know the man arrested for his father’s death.
“We were just notified about the arrest, we feel somewhat relieved,” William says.
