Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius

The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) says Oscar Pistorius’ murder sentence of six years behind bars is “an embarrassment to the justice system of the country”.

ANCWL members were in the North Gauteng Court yesterday when Pistorius’ sentence was handed down.

They have been at almost every court appearance when Pistorius was in the dock and last year also at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein when the athlete’s culpable homicide conviction was overturned.

Yesterday the league’s Gauteng spokeswoman Jacqui Mofokeng said: “It’s an embarrassment to the justice system of this country. It’s a total insult to women.”

“At least a 10-year sentence would have meant something to us. The judge was speaking of a 15-year sentence. I don’t get it.

“The judge has now only added one year to the five years she sentenced him for culpable homicide,” says Mofokeng.

Talking to Capetalk later, Mofokeng added: “It’s actually an insult to the Steenkamp family.”

She says the ANCWL will not stop in its quest for justice for Reeva.

“As the Women’s League, we are going to take the judgement for legal opinion so we can be guided and know what we can do if it happens again. We should be able to stand for women,” Mofokeng says.
