Three Tshwane Metro Police Department officers had to run for their lives yesterday after a group of disgruntled ANC members attacked and overturned their marked service vehicle in Pretoria.
The TMPD has appealed for calm after violence erupted in various spots around the capital city, after the ANC announced its mayoral candidates list for the August 3 local government polls.
“They were busy on their normal patrols, unaware that they were driving towards the protesters. They were confronted by the protesters and stones were thrown at them,” said TMPD spokesman Isaac Mahamba.
“All three were injured. They managed to run away from the protesters and call for back-up. The protesters fled.”
A TMPD tow truck later arrived and towed the damaged vehicle which had been lying on its roof on the busy intersection of Francis Baard and Beckett Streets in Arcadia, east of Pretoria.
