The SJC indicated it could be heading to court to try and stop the move by the Department of Public Works.
The department has confirmed the SAPS has put in a request to upgrade and extend the police station in Muizenberg to the tune of R100 million.
But people say there are other areas, like Nyanga and Vrygrond, that need new police stations much more.
Nyanga had 279 murders in one financial year according to the latest crimes stats, compared to Muizenberg’s 27 cases.
The SJC has rejected the department and police’s plan to upgrade the Muizenberg
cop shop.
Spokeswoman Chumile Sali says they plan more action, like turning to the courts, against the move.
The SJC will also be mobilising Muizenberg residents to oppose the plan because the price tag was “indefensible”.
SAPS spokeswoman Brigadier Novela Potelwa said yesterday the Muizenberg upgrade was part of a “planned process in terms of the building’s life cycle”.
The brigadier added: “It is worth placing on record that we strive towards the equitable distribution of SAPS resources guided by crime trends and patterns, as well as spatial growth and development.
“It is on that basis that the construction of Tafelsig [Mitchells Plain], Makhaza [Khayelitsha] and Weltevreden [Nyanga] police stations is in the initial phase. These projects are undertaken by the SAPS’ in-house expert services as they are newly built police stations.”
