Two traffic officers have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of R3 000 from a taxi driver.
The cops were supposed to impound the van, but allegedly let the driver go after he gave them the money.
The traffic cops have since been suspended.
The cops, who work at the Kuils River Traffic Department, are facing criminal charges of bribery and defeating the ends of justice.
It is understood they pulled the taxi driver over during a stop-and-search procedure, but allegedly accepted a bribe when the driver offered them R5 000 to let him go.
The driver had R3 000 in his possession which the traffic cops allegedly accepted.
The alleged incident took place at the Total Garage in Kuilsriver on 31 March.
The driver then contacted authorities to piemp the cops and an investigation ensued.
Both traffic officials were arrested and detained at Kuils River Police Station on Friday.
Richard Bosman, the City’s Executive Director for Safety and Security, confirms: “In terms of the City’s internal processes, the officers have been provisionally suspended pending an internal disciplinary hearing. They received the internal charges against them on Friday, 6 April. The officers are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“The City does not condone any illegal behaviour on the part of staff members and will deal with the matter swiftly and in line with City processes.”
