Two employees of Muslim Hands were held up in the parking lot at about 11am.
According to another worker, who asked not to be named, two employees were taking cash to the bank when they were approached by four gunmen and robbed of the money.
“There were five men but the one was in the car,” he said.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms the robbery and that police are looking for five suspects. He says no shots were fired during the robbery and there were no injuries.
The employee says while they have security, the incident happened outside the premises.
“We have increased our security. Look, we have security but this incident happened outside but we have increased our security anyways,” he says.
“The amount taken was not that much and so it won’t affect the organisation’s operations. The most important thing is that the employees were not hurt.”
Van Wyk says police are investigating the armed robbery and anyone with information is asked to call Athlone Police Station on 021 697 9238/39.
