MTN ‘skelms’ nabbed

ROBBERY: MTN store

Cops have arrested four men who allegedly robbed an MTN store at a Cape Flats mall last week.

The suspects, believed to be behind the robbery at Kenilworth Centre where cellphones and a laptop were stolen, were nabbed during a roadblock on Friday afternoon.

Police were carrying out a crime prevention roadblock in Claremont on Friday at 2.15pm when they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle.

They searched the car but did not find anything incriminating.

However, upon further investigation, they learnt the men were suspects in the robbery at MTN last Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms the arrest but could not give the location where the men were busted: “In line with the back to basics approach to policing, police members were conducting crime prevention patrols when they noticed a suspicious vehicle with four men inside.

“The vehicle was stopped and searched and nothing was found.

“Further investigation was conducted and it was discovered the four suspects, aged between 22 and 28 years, were the suspects who had perpetrated a business robbery at a cellphone shop on 23 May in Claremont.”

The suspects are due to make their first appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on charges relating to business robbery today.

It was the second robbery at Kenilworth Centre in less than a week.

On 17 May, robbers stole hundreds of bottles of perfume at the Foschini store.

Mall management has refused to comment on the incidents.
