MTN must be the unluckiest cellphone service provider in South Africa as another of its Cape stores was robbed this week.
The cellphone giant has been hit by a spate of robberies in Cape Town suburbs over the past 10 months, and on Wednesday, store number eight was hit in broad daylight.
The MTN store in the Steenberg Village Centre in Reddam Avenue, Tokai, were stormed by four armed robbers shortly after 2pm.
The brazen skelms threatened staff and held them at gunpoint.
The robbers then fled with an undisclosed amount of brand-new cell phones from the store.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, confirmed the robbery and says the suspects are yet to be arrested.
“The circumstances surrounding a business robbery on Wednesday afternoon at around 2pm at a cellular telephone shop in a shopping centre in Kirstenhof are being investigated following an incident where four suspects held staff at gunpoint and fled with cellular telephones. They are yet to be arrested,” Traut said.
On behalf of MTN, Gaba Majola, General Manager at Branded Retail Channel, said no injuries were reported.
“Post-traumatic counselling for the employees and customers that were present during this incident was arranged," says Makola.
“MTN cannot comment any further on the matter as the case is now under police investigation.”
In July, the MTN store in the Eikestad Mall in Stellenbosch was robbed by seven armed skelms.
The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cellphones and are yet to be arrested.
