Derrick Adonis, from Pelican Park, says “each day” he witnesses smash-and-grab incidents at the intersection of Jakkalsvlei Avenue as criminals prey on drivers making their way to and from work during rush hour.
The intersection is a known crime hotspot and last month a motorist shot and killed an alleged skollie, aged 34, after he tried to rob the driver of a maroon Mazda.
On Tuesday, Adonis says he witnessed yet another incident.
“They pulled a gun on a motorist and hit and assaulted him for the cellphone and other possessions. They ran off and he drove into another vehicle due to fear for his life.”
Adonis has now written a letter to provincial police calling for action and complaining about the lack of service from police.
“[It happens] every day for years now and I am a victim and witness to this,” he wrote.
“We can’t do anything as the perpetrators are armed and dangerous. Why can’t government put up signs and cameras to warn motorists about this hotspot?”
He called for more cop patrols in the area.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed that an armed robbery case has been opened for investigation after an incident.
“Police conduct crime prevention in the area,” she said.
However, Adonis, says at the time of the incident there were no police.
Previously, Elizabeth Kleinsmith, a member of the Bishop Lavis Neighbourhood Watch, said skelms stand in a gangetjie near the intersection and pounce on motorists waiting at the robot.
