Given the already over-subscribed peak trains, Metrorail has adjusted its service offering to absorb the anticipated additional passenger volumes.
Regional Manager Richard Walker says that regular commuters can expect increased volumes
"We acknowledge that peak trains are already full and appeal to all train users to be patient, courteous and to assist fellow commuters."
He said that commuter volumes will be monitored continuously and confirmed that station staff will be on duty at key transport interchanges and stations.
"We advise commuters to arrive earlier at train stations rather than later, to consult the fare calculator for the correct fare and to check our social media sites for real-time service information."
From April 12, the following service arrangements will apply:
- Trains may terminate sooner at key stations to accommodate higher volumes;
- All platforms will be cleared of passengers before trains stable overnight;
- Schedule adjustments may have to be made to cope with volumes; and
- Extended train operating hours.
Only current Golden Arrow Bus Services clip-card tickets will be accepted on Metrorail trains (until expiry date = weeklies expire on April 25, 2017 and monthlies on May 17, 2017). Metrorail fares will apply to all other commuters.
Walker said as the backbone of public transport in the Western Cape, Metrorail would do its utmost to leave no commuter stranded during the bus strike.
