There was chaos in Cape Town yesterday as commuters struggled to get into the city.
Trains were delayed for hours following several incidents of vandalism, and motorists had to contend with two car accidents on the N1 and N2 highways.
The City of Cape Town and Golden Arrow assisted by deploying more buses, but train commuters were still delayed for up to two hours or more, while motorists and bus commuters factored in an extra hour.
In the past two weeks, four trains were set alight, and on Friday morning, an apparatus case was burnt in Philippi and cables were stolen at Salt River.
Metrorail has warned that commuters can expect the same scenario today and the rest of the week.
Spokesperson Riana Scott says some trains to and from Chris Hani Station will be re-routed via Salt River/Mutual stations, while others will depart from Mutual Station.
Commuters are advised to use connecting trains starting with numbers 900- to connect between Cape Town and Mutual.
“It is important to listen to announcements to ensure that they board the right trains.”
Metrorail Regional manager Richard Walker assured commuters that customer services employees will be on duty to assist where needed.
He said they would continue to operate trains “until all commuters have been transported home”.
Mense are advised to also consult social media feeds for the latest service updates.
