A homeless mentally disabled man was shot dead just metres from a police station.
Bonteheuwel residents who witnessed the murder of Stephen “Sagat” Dyers, 31, claim he was shot from behind by suspected gangsters yesterday morning.
Stephen, a former drug addict, was gunned down on the corners of Jakkalsvlei and Bonteheuwel Avenue at around 9.05am.
A woman, 49, who identified herself as his cousin but would not give her name, confirmed Stephen had a mental illness and had been homeless for a while.
“We don’t know who shot him or why he was shot when he wasn’t a gangster,” she says.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk says the suspects are still at large.
“[Police] found the body of a 32-year-old male [31]... with a bullet wound in his right upper chest,” Van Wyk says.
“According to witnesses they heard gun shots and then saw somebody running away from the incident.
“No arrest yet. Police opened a murder docket.”
