Victim Marco “Lange” Lawrence's body was discovered in Scottsville on Thursday night by a resident after a shootout occurred in Milton street.
His family, who arrived at the scene, says Marco was due to appear in court the next day.
But they refused to reveal the details of the case.
The message on the wall, which had been painted by members of the People Unity Save Community (PUSC), reads: “Peace and Love.”
The mural was created by Rastas in the area in a bid to turn the tide against crime in the community.
The murals, with colourful pictures of people playing sports, spread positive messages of hope. Ward councillor Grant Twigg called Kraaifontein a warzone because of 52 murders in the area within three months.
Councillor Twigg said: “The army needs to be called in to make a change in Kraaifontein.
“Kraaifontein has a lack of manpower to fight crime in the area.”
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms the shooting.
“At about 8.10pm on Thursday, Kraaifontein SAPS members received a complaint of shooting in progress at Milton Road, Scottsville, Kraaifontein.
“On arrival a 35-year-old victim was found with several gunshot wounds to the body.
“The victim was certified dead on the scene.
“Circumstances surrounding this fatal shooting incident are unknown.
“A murder case was opened for investigation.”
