Police have nabbed a man for selling pirate DVDs and CDs worth more than R230 000.
The Nigerian foreign national was bust on Friday by wakker cops patrolling around Cape Town International Airport.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says members from the Anti-Smuggling Team CCU were at the Airport Mall in Stellenbosch Arterial Road at about 9am when they noticed a man selling DVDs and CDs at the main entrance.
“After further inspection a brand protector, Mr Jeremy Ali, was called out to confirm whether copyright infringement could be determined. The brand protector confirmed that the DVDs and CDs are not originals and that the 50-year-old Nigerian national selling them does not have the rights to sell or distribute the disks,” says Van Wyk.
“The suspect’s house at Sweetgum Street, N2 Gateway, Delft, was searched and a plastic bag with counterfeit 685 DVDs and 286 CDs with an estimated value of R23 410 was seized.”
The suspect was arrested on charges of copyright infringement and is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court today.
