A 45-year-old man, believed to be from Delft, was shot and killed at the Lansdowne train station early on Tuesday morning.
According to witnesses, the man was on his way to work, and was shot by people who intended to rob him in Clive Road.
Police arrived on the scene immediately and were shot at as the robbers sped away.
Spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says: “A murder case has been opened at Lansdowne SAPS after a 45-year-old man got fatally wounded as a result of a shooting incident that took place at the railway station in Crawford, Lansdowne, [yesterday] at 6.10am.
“An attempted murder case was also registered after the suspect allegedly fired shots at the police as they gave chase.”
