The event was arranged by a new organisation called the Bishop Lavis Action Community (BLAC) and is aimed at mobilising residents to fight back against criminals.
One of the founders and former Bishop Lavis resident, Charl Davids, says following recent murders in the area, three former residents came together to find a way to help residents take a stand.
“After all the killings we came together for a walk to all the murder sites where people have died. It is about healing the community and getting them to take their space back,” says Charl.
“The community is very traumatised and the last time they were at those places, there were dead bodies.
“Safety and security is a human rights issue and we will be taking it up with government departments to see what can be done.”
In one of the most recent incidents, a 28-year-old man was shot in the chest and leg following a drive-by shooting in 4th Street on Monday, 14 August.
Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum (CPF) spokesperson, Reverend Isaac Harley, says residents are living in fear.
BLAC has now rallied all churches in Bishop Lavis to join a mass community march on Sunday, 10 September, where instead of holding individual church services, they will march to the sports field and hold a mass service for the community.
“The CPF supports this initiative. They will be bringing all stakeholders together and get the community together. It is time for the community to say genoeg is genoeg. Our children are dying and the community is living in fear.”.
