Residents could be seen burning tyres and rubble, stoning cars and damaging City infrastructure to get their message across.
The City’s Maxine Bezuidenhout confirmed roads were closed in the area for most of Saturday.
“Violent protesting occurred at the Malawi Squatter Camp. 35th Avenue was closed between Robert Sobukwe and Owen Road. Lavis Drive was closed as well,” Bezuidenhout said.
Law Enforcement’s Wayne Dyason said no arrests were made.
“Residents were demanding an improvement of basic services and electricity. Damages to traffic signals on 35th Avenue and Bishop Lavis Drive were also done. The roadway was obstructed with debris and rubble. SAPS Sector and Fire and Rescue, Law Enforcement and traffic officials were on the scene. No arrests,” Dyason said.
Commuters travelling via train were also inconvenienced as Metrorail announced that alternative transport had to be taken as protesters tyres on fire on the train tracks.
“Trains from Cape Town to Bellville via Lavistown are terminated at Langa, due to protesters burning tyres on the tracks between Belhar and Lavistown,” Metrorail said.
