The case against two men accused of killing Khayelitsha teen Sinoxolo Mafevuka appears to be relying heavily on a jersey.
Arguments in the bail application of the two accused are expected to be heard next Monday.
This after cross examination was wrapped up at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court yesterday where two cousins accused of raping and murdering the 19-year-old in SST section near Town Two in March.
The men, aged 21 and 28, cannot be identified after the state made an application with the court.
The duo, who are related to Sinoxolo’s boyfriend, were arrested just weeks after the murder after a jersey belonging to them was found at the scene.
Yesterday, the pair’s lawyer Thabo Nogemane ripped into the state’s evidence when questioning the case’s investigating officer, Constable Butiki Tshabalala.
Advocate Nogemane asked why the investigator had failed to obtain statements from key witnesses in the case, including those who claimed to have heard voices that sounded like those of the accused near the crime scene on the night Sinoxolo was murdered.
Nogemane also questioned why the statement of the man Sinoxolo had allegedly cheated on her boyfriend with days before she was murdered was never obtained.
Constable Tshabalala maintained the state had a strong enough case against the men.
“We still have a strong case against the accused as we have the jersey that is said to belong to one or both accused,” he told the court.
The matter is back in court on June 27 for arguments and a verdict on the bail application which has been dragging for over three months.
