Johannesburg — A 59-year-old grandfather have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the repeated rape rape of his 11-year-old granddaughter, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the incidents took place in the Ezakheni area between December 2015 and April 2016 before the man was caught.
Gwala said: “The grandfather was raping the child in the garage when the grandmother walked in on the act.”
The matter was reported to the police and the grandfather was arrested and tried in the Ezakheni Regional Court which found him guilty and last week sentenced him to 20 years. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name would be entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
In a separate incident, Mmeli Shabalala, 20, also received a 20-year prison sentence after being caught raping a nine-year-old girl.
According to Gwala, the girl’s sister walked into their home and saw the incident which she reported to their mother.
Shabalala was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name would also be entered in the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
