The City’s Fire and Rescue Services had their hands full battling several blazes in Mandela Park settlement in Hout Bay, Mfuleni, Crossroads, Wallacedene, St Patricks’ Crescent Lavender Hill, Gugulethu and New Rest informal settlement.
Two men lost their lives in the fires, which destroyed a total of 200 homes.
In a devastating blaze on Sunday morning, 300 people from Mandela Park were left homeless as flames gutted 100 informal structures.
Fire and Rescue services spokesperson Theo Layne said: “At 2am, more than 100 structures were destroyed leaving approximately 300 people displaced. One adult male sustained fatal burns. No other injuries were reported.
“Twelve fire engines and eight water tankers with more than 80 firefighters brought the fire under control just before six on Sunday morning.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Firefighting crews will remain on scene throughout the day damping down and dealing with the many hotspots.”
Relief efforts are currently being provided to those affected by the weekend’s fires, with the solid waste, water and sanitation department on site busy with the rehabilitation process.
