Pupils and teachers at Cedar High School of Arts in Rocklands say they are working hard to reinstill a sense of pride and belonging in their school.
Next week, the school will host their inaugural Pride Festival aimed at raising much-needed funds and making pupils proud of their school.
Leading the charge is English teacher Fagan Muller who says the event will tie in with the school’s 30th anniversary.
In recent months, he explains, the school has had to let five teachers go as they could not afford their salaries. “This is because of the non-payment of school fees. When looking at the situation, we found that pupils and parents are not proud of their school despite the amazing programmes we have going.
“Right now we have about 50 pupils to one teacher as we have had to merge classes. I feel like I am lecturing, not teaching. So the festival will be held to reignite the love for their school.”
Muller says they hope that by inspiring the learners, they can bring parents closer to the school.
On Wednesday 2 August the school will host various activities for learners during school hours where they will line up for a drone picture to mark the 30th anniversary, have stalls and get the chance to perform their acts.
Muller says a parent recently donated materials for the construction of a concrete outdoor stage and the school is currently struggling to pay for the labour to have it completed before the festival.
