According to a report by City Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 1am where they found a taxi and a storage room on fire in Mount Close.
“The fire started in the taxi and according to the report, there was nobody in the taxi at the time. The fire spread to a storage room which had car parts and household furniture inside.”
Layne explains the fire was extinguished at 1.12am and there were no injuries and no fatalities.
“Two fire engines, one water tanker, one rescue vehicle and 14 firefighters were dispatched from the Belhar and Kuils River fire stations. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage.”
When the Daily Voice visited the home on Wednesday, a man named John Lewis De Wet confirmed that he was the owner of the taxi.
“The fire was started in the van. It stands next door by my mother-in-law’s house. I didn’t even go look at the van,” he said.
Initially, De Wet agreed to show the Daily Voice the damage but after speaking to his wife, he refused to answer any additional questions.
Another relative also arrived and told the Daily Voice that the family do not want to comment.
