A Bonteheuwel mother who was attacked in a drive-by shooting with her family has lost two fingers.
Shireen Abrahams, 51, is still in Groote Schuur Hospital’s intensive care unit after doctors amputated two fingers of the hand that was injured during the shooting last week.
On Wednesday night Shireen, her husband Imam Maghdie, 50, and their sons Ebrahiema, 21, Muneer, 19, and Mushud, 14, were attacked by gunmen in what the family believes to be a case of mistaken identity.
The attack came just a day after the murder of Marlon Valentine, 28, who was shot a short distance from where the family was attacked in Juniper Street.
Several shots were fired into the side and front of the Abrahams’ white Opel Kadett.
Family spokesperson Aziz Abrahams yesterday told the Daily Voice Shireen, Ebrahiema and Mushud’s conditions are all stable.
“Shireen had two operations on Thursday during which her ring and middle finger on her left hand were amputated. Doctors said they could not save her fingers because they were already hanging on just the flesh.”
Aziz says trauma counselling has been arranged for the family.
Although there have been no arrests, Aziz says the community has assisted cops.
Meanwhile, anti-crime organisation, Pagad, held a community meeting at the local mosque yesterday, offering help.
“We will be the strong arm in this community if you allow us to be. We have the right to defend life,” the organisation said.
