A visitor to the beach at the Monwabisi Resort got the shock of his life on Saturday when what he thought to be seaweed turned out to be a dead body brushing up against his legs.
The man’s hands were tied behind his back and it’s believed he had been murdered.
Sandile Tshepo, 49, from Khayelitsha said he has never been so scared in his life.
“I felt something move against me and thought it was just seaweed, but then I saw a big dark shape and then it turned and I screamed, running and it felt like it was holding me," he says.
“The male body bumped into me, hands tied behind his back and we were screaming and running out of the water.
“For a moment it felt like it was clinging to me and I could not get out of the waist-deep water.
"When I got to the shore I prayed. The ancestors know why I must not swim at the beach."
Swimmers at the beach alerted the lifeguards.
Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirms a murder docket has been opened for investigation.
“The circumstances surrounding a murder of an unknown man are being investigated after his body was recovered at Monwabisi in Harare," Traut says.
“His hands were tied and the motive for the murder is unknown at this stage."
