The City and the DA expressed its shock and sadness after the fatal shooting of Xolile Gwangxu, a councillor in the greater Philippi area.
The City says a man wearing a hoodie walked up to Gwangxu and shot him in the head.
Mayor Patricia De Lille’s spokesperson Zara Nicholson said Gwangxu served as a councillor for eight years.
He had two children, aged 10 and three years old, and lived in Westridge, Mitchells Plain.
“It is terribly shocking. It is a great loss to the city and its people,” said Nicholson.
“He was a committed leader who worked tirelessly. The City wishes to extend its condolences to the family and friends. We will do everything in our power to make sure the perpetrators are brought to book.”
“The City is offering a reward of R50 000 for any information that leads to the arrest and successful conviction of the person responsible for this horrific crime.”
Gwangxu was shot dead after he facilitated a meeting which was held at his office in the local community hall on Wednesday night.
“His killer or killers are alleged to have shot him as he was busy locking up the venue following the meeting,” said DA Western Cape Acting Leader Bonginkosi Madikizela.
“Councillor Gwangxu, a long-standing DA member, was a well-known and respected leader in the area he served, and he did so with honourable commitment and determination.”
“Our thoughts are with his family during this sad time.”
