The three City of Cape Town officials, who have since been suspended, were nabbed by their own colleagues during a Ghost Squad operation in Milnerton and Plattekloof.
Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says at about 11pm on Wednesday, an officer spotted a Subaru and Ford ST racing along the N7 in the direction of Bosmansdam Road.
He called for back-up and pursued the vehicles, eventually forcing them to a stop.
Upon interrogating the drivers, officers found that one of them was a woman traffic cop and the other a firefighter, who had another female traffic officer in the passenger seat.
“The suspects were charged with reckless and negligent driving and participating in an illegal street race,” said Smith, who has been clamping down on drag racers across the city.
He told the Daily Voice the trio were issued with suspension letters and will see the executive director tomorrow.
“They would need very good reasons to prevent being suspended,” says Smith.
Milnerton Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson, Lianne Lippert, says dicing along the N7 is a big problem in Milnerton and they are glad to see the law being applied to all.
“The racing is a major concern and we are glad that they are doing something. We were very shocked to learn that traffic cops were also dicing and while we are happy that action is also being taken against them it is bad for the other traffic cops. Because of these silly sausages, all of them will be painted with the same brush.”
