The constable stationed at the Lingelethu West Police Station was responding to a complaint and was on the corner of Ntlazane and Ncotsheni Roads in Ilitha Park, Lingelethu West, just after 8pm when he was attacked.
The 41-year-old constable was rushed to Kuils River Medi-Clinic for medical attention and is currently in a stable condition.
It could not be confirmed whether the constable’s firearm was taken from him at the scene.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed the shooting and says a case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation.
“This office can confirm that circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Sunday evening, 14 May, at about 8.20pm in Ndwalazi Drive, Ilitha Park, Lingelethu West, where a 41-year-old constable was injured is under investigation. An attempted murder case has been opened for investigation,” Van Wyk said.
