It was a gruesome scene when an officer attached to the Public Order Police (POP) unit died after he was knocked over on Sunday just after 8pm on Baden Powell Drive, near Makhaza.
The officer is believed to have been pushing his car along the busy road when an officer attached to the National Intervention Unit (NIU) ran him down.
The impact cut the POP member’s body in half.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, confirmed the tragedy and says a case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation.
“This office can confirm that the circumstances surrounding a culpable homicide case are being investigated following an accident last night at around 8pm on Baden Powell Road Makhaza,” he says.
"An off-duty police officer was pushing his vehicle when another off-duty constable collided with him, while driving his private vehicle. The member succumbed on the scene due to the injuries he sustained.”
