The boy attends a special needs school on the Cape Flats.
His grandmother says they heard about the incident while bathing him.
“My grandson has a mental disability. He is three years behind and also suffers from epilepsy. Last year November he came home and he was just different,” says the ouma.
“I thought perhaps he was tired and told his mother to give him a bath.
“It was then that he spoke about this mysterious man and how the man played ‘horsey’ on his back.
“We were terrified and immediately had him checked out.
“The doctor confirmed he was penetrated in his anus by a penis or an object as there were scabs around his anus,” the heartbroken grandmother says.
“He could tell us he was taken to the man’s house. He is very emotional when he speaks about it.
“He was only at school three weeks this year. He’s traumatised. Now the school is stating there is no one by that name (the caretaker). The principal keeps brushing us off.
A police report confirmed the child had been sodomised.
Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schäfer says the matter was investigated.
“When the learner reported the abuse, it was attended to in accordance to the Western Cape Education Department’s Abuse No More protocol document. The alleged perpetrator that was identified by the victim is not known to the school.
“The learner’s case was referred to the designated child protection agency for investigation.”
