A police officer is among 11 people killed on the province’s roads over the weekend.
On Saturday, Constable Lee-Roy Roberts, who was stationed at Cape Town Central Police Station, died when his motorbike collided with a car along the R301 between Paarl and Wellington.
Police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk says a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
“It is alleged that the deceased collided into the back of a Toyota Conquest. The member died on the scene. The cause of the accident is not known at this early stage,” he says.
Rescue teams also had their hands full early yesterday morning along Old Faure Road, where two people died and one was injured when a truck and a bakkie collided.
Paramedics arrived to find the bakkie wedged under the front of the huge truck, leaving two men trapped.
Both men passed away at the scene, and the third person was transported to hospital for treatment.
Paramedics were also called to Jakes Gerwel Drive, Hanover Park, yesterday where a vehicle had crashed into a fence after rolling. One person died and four others were injured.
It’s alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle after a scuffle with one of the passengers.
At a third scene, police and paramedics assisted a woman in her seventies after her vehicle collided with a large van along Tokai and Keyser River Road.
Kenny Africa, the Provincial Traffic Chief, urged motorists to be extra vigilant during winter.
“Shorter, darker days and fog during the winter months can increase the risk of road traffic crashes. We live in a winter rainfall region, and rain can make roads slippery, and hamper visibility.”

One person was nabbed for reckless and negligent driving in George, one for excessive speed in Beaufort West (177 km/h in a 120 km/h zone) and one for failing to reveal a name and address to a traffic officer in the Vredenburg area.
