The ANC had to create a new Twitter account after hackers created a parody account using its name.
The ANC became aware of the fake account after people spotted a tweet by @MyANC that read: “If you don’t support Cde Jacob Zuma, we do not want your votes! #Elections2016”.
ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa confirmed on Saturday that the ANC’s old account had been hacked, forcing the party to create a brand-new one.
“It has come to our attention that some mischievous characters have created a new Twitter account using our previous account handle (@MyANC_). Our new handle, as from [Friday], is @MYANC (without underscore),” Kodwa said in a statement.
“We reject, with the contempt they deserve, the disturbing views as posted on the parody account, purporting to be those of the ANC.
“The ANC has swiftly reported the parody account to Twitter. We are confident that action will be taken against this parody account,” Kodwa said.
Kodwa rejected the possibility it might have been one of their own behind the message.
“It is not possible that it will be an insider,” he said.
