The ANC hopes it has done enough to reclaim the Cape from the DA.
The ruling party’s Secretary General Gwede Mantashe was in the province over the weekend to campaign for the ANC ahead of the August 3, municipal elections.
On Saturday, Mantashe toured the informal settlements around Gugulethu and Philippi speaking to community members about their concerns.
Yesterday, Mantashe was at the Assembly of God Church in Nyanga where he urged the flock to pray for the ANC and the internal corruption threatening it.
He said God had anointed the ANC to rule the country.
When asked whether he thought the ANC had done enough to lure voters back, he replied: “There is hope that we can do better, we have two weeks to do more.”
“The issue in this province is we are having a tale of two cities, the one for the poor and the one for the rich. I can assure you the townships in Ekurhuleni where I come from are not as bad as the ones here.”
Mantashe, accompanied by the ANC’s Cape Town Mayoral Candidate, Xolani Sotashe, and Provincial Secretary, Faiez Jacobs, went on a walkabout, greeting supporters who posed for selfies with him.
An ANC member came behind the group, handing out party T-shirts.
Problems arose when some supporters claimed they were being overlooked.
“Give us the T-shirts, wena, they are not yours. How are we supposed to vote for you if you don’t give us T-shirts,” a woman shouted.
Minutes after Mantashe left, two groups fought over two T-shirts, which one of them eventually pulled free.
