The weekend came to a bloody end with at least four people dead and six left with serious injuries in three separate road accidents on Cape Town roads.
In the early hours of yesterday morning, three women died during an alleged drunken driving smash.
The deadly crash happened on the corner of Van Riebeeck Road and Polkadraai Road in Kuils River.
The City of Cape Town traffic services spokesperson, Maxine Jordaan, says the male driver lost control of the vehicle. All three of the deceased were female.
The driver was arrested for drunk driving and a charge of culpable homicide.
Later, at 7.10am, a 30-year-old man died in another car accident involving a taxi in Kasselsvlei, Bellville.
At the same time, traffic in Buttskop Road, Blackheath, was obstructed after a truck lost its load of wood.
And on Sunday night, three people suffered serious injuries as they were trapped in their vehicles during a four-car pile up also involving a taxi.
Four cars crashed trying to avoid each other on Jakes Gerwel Drive near Surrey Estate.
While police and traffic services could not immediately confirm it, it’s alleged the driver of the Quantum van was drunk and ran off after the accident.
Eyewitnesses say the van lost its front bumper and a second car crashed into another vehicle while trying to avoid being hit by the flying bumper.
“The red Polo swerved out of the way and crashed into a [VW] Caravelle,” a man told the Daily Voice.
“A third car that tried to avoid all the others crashed into the barrier and spun into the opposite direction.
“Some people had to be cut out of the cars because they were trapped.
“The driver of the first car got out and ran away,” he added.
Jordaan says the injured victims were rushed to hospital in serious and critical conditions.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says no arrests have been made.
