An alleged gang boss and drug dealer and one of his henchmen have been wiped out right in front of his home in broad daylight.
It is believed there had been several attempts on Wayne McKenna’s life, including two attempts inside churches on the Cape Flats. McKenna, 40, was sitting with Jawie Isaacs, 23, drinking outside a house in Fairdale Street, Connaught Estate, Ravensmead, on Sunday just after 4.30pm when gunmen fired shots out of a silver Astra.
It is not clear whether McKenna lived in the street or in Parow.
Both men were shot in the head after a total of about "12 rounds" were fired.
They lay close to each other near the vibacrete wall, blood running out of their lifeless bodies as shocked community members looked on.
Sources, who were close to McKenna, say they believe the hit was the work of his own men, members of the 26 prison gang.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirms the shooting and says no arrests have been made.
Sources close to McKenna says he was a dik ding: “They were 26 gang members. Wayne McKenna was similar to Colin Stanfield, Ralph Stanfield and Ernie 'Lastig' Solomons. The two suspects are known to us, they are also 26 gangsters. They are youngsters.”
Another source reveals McKenna, who was active in the underworld and drug trade, escaped several attempts on his life.
It is believed there were three attempts on his life in the past 12 months before his killers landed the fatal blow.
In 2003, McKenna survived being shot five times at the altar of a church in Ravensmead.
Last March, he was again targeted while attending
a funeral in Leonsdale in Elsies River.
He was shot in the chest and his vehicle was set alight.
“He was one of the Cape Flats’ most notorious alleged drug dealers and gang leaders.
“McKenna was shot dead in Ravensmead and we are praying for no violence and gang retaliation,” the source says.
