Newlands divided

Kaapies support Chiefa in droves.

Hele se Chiefs fans stieking uit.

When the Chiefs landed in Cape Town on Monday night, they were welcomed by hordes of fans wanting autographs and their pictures taken.

New Zealand teams have always enjoyed huge support from Capetonians.

And with Saturday’s quarterfinal between the Stormers and the Chiefs at Newlands being the first visit from Kiwi opponents to Cape Town this year, the stadium will be divided once again.

Chiefs flyhalf Aaron Cruden knows they won’t have a shortage of fans at the ground, saying: “We always like coming [to Newlands]… we do get good support here. I’m sure there’s going to be a few Stormers _supporters as well.

“But the more Chiefs supporters we can get into the ground, it will be great.”

Stormers coach Robbie Fleck is aware of the split among fans, but says he will tell his players to embrace the occasion.

He explains: “I think it’s fantastic – any side that comes here, we want Newlands packed and whoever they support, they support.

“I think that our guys are just so excited to get out there and hopefully it’s 43 000 people…”
