BLOW: Coach John Dobson

WP without exciting midfielder Du Plessis for Sharks Cup clash.

Western Province will have to take the field against the Sharks in their Currie Cup match this weekend without midfielder Daniel du Plessis.

The 21-year-old inside centre suffered a knee injury in their first win of the campaign against the EP Kings last
weekend and will in all likelihood be replaced by Johnny Kotze, who has not enjoyed the best start to the season.

Coach John Dobson, though, can also opt to bring in rookie EW Viljoen.

Of Du Plessis’ injury, Dobson says: “Dan du Plessis will be out for a couple of weeks, he tweaked his ACL, didn’t pull it.

“I was really looking
forward to unveiling him in this Currie Cup – we haven’t managed to give him some momentum yet because of injury… it’s a pity.

“EW Viljoen and Johnny Kotze [will cover the midfield]. EW has done well at centre for the U21s – he’s a big boy, so he’s an option.”

Province announced their new intake of players last week, with reigning World Sevens Player of they Year Werner Kok among those added to the squad.

And while scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage and
Sevens Olympian Tim Agaba have been spotted at the High Performance Centre in Bellville, there is still no official word on when, and if, the duo will star for WP.

Of Agaba, Dobson says: “Tim just trained with us today, he hasn’t played XVs since Currie Cup last year.

“Dewaldt’s been training with us for a couple of weeks, so theoretically they’re both in the frame.”

As for their upcoming game, Dobson knows his team will have to improve dramatically if they want to get the better of the unbeaten Sharks this weekend.

The coach says: “They’ve got a very big pack of forwards, they’re all Super Rugby players in that pack – very physical, very territorial based game.

“[Scrumhalf Stefan] Ungerer has got a massive boot, and if you get your kicking wrong, they’ve got massive x-factor in guys like [Lukhanyo] Am and
[Curwin] Bosch, so it’s a big challenge for us.”
