Early morning collision left a taxi on its side and passengers scattered around it.

This was the scene where one person was killed and 13 others were injured when their taxi overturned on the M5 highway yesterday morning.

The crash, in which a white Toyota Quantum rolled several times after hitting a lamp post, occurred shortly after 7am near Maitland.

Emergency services arrived at the scene to find the wrecked taxi lying on its side on a veldjie with the passengers scattered around it.

It’s believed they survived after being ejected from the mangled vehicle as it rolled.

ER24’s Werner Vermaak says one person was found with fatal injuries and declared dead on the scene.

“Three people were found with critical injuries, one of them was placed on life support on the scene,” he explains.

“Four others sustained serious injuries while the rest of the patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“The driver was the only occupant trapped inside the vehicle. Metro EMS had to use rescue equipment to free him from the wreckage.”

Vermaak says the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

“However, it is believed the taxi collided with a lamppost before overturning,” he adds.

The City’s Senior Traffic Officer, Richard Coleman, says the deceased was a woman.

“Of those injured, eight women and three men sustained serious injuries while two men were treated for moderate injuries and they were all taken to Groote Schuur Hospital,” he says.

“At this point it appears the occupants were all travelling to work at the time of the incident.”

By last night, officials said the total recorded deaths on the province’s roads for the weekend stood at 16.
