New Bafana Bafana call-up Lars Veldwijk is excited to make his debut in the gold and green this weekend.
South Africa are preparing for a crunch World Cup qualifier against Senegal on Saturday (3pm) and the giant Dutch-born hitman is impressing in training ahead of the Polokwane showdown.
The Belgium-based Kortjik ace looked sharp at the opening training session in blazing heat at Peter Mokaba Stadium and oozed confidence that he wants to do well for his country.
The imposing 1.97m tall striker says: “Everyone wants to go to the Russia 2018 World Cup. That is every player’s dream to play at the highest level and they don’t come bigger than the World Cup.
“I have been well received here; the people are fantastic, they have welcomed me and my new teammates are terrific. There has been positive energy all round and I am so excited to be here.
“The only minor setback has been the blazing heat but that is why we came here earlier; by Saturday we have adjusted and should be fine.”
On what he knows about African football, Lars said he followed a bit of South African football but was aware how tough Senegal was considering the number of top players plying their trade in Europe.
He adds: “But I think we should have a good measure of them on Saturday… because we will be spurred on by our own supporters.”
