In a spate of robberies at businesses ahead of the upcoming holiday season, thieves have targeted a liquor store in Philippi.
In the latest business robbery to hit the Cape Flats, the Shoprite Liquor store in Philippi Mall was ransacked by an armed gang of robbers.
Staff and security at the store were tight-lipped about the incident and did not want to comment to the media.
Shoprite’s Corporate Communications Manager, Saritavan Wyk, confirmed that a robbery took place, and that fortunately no one was harmed during the attack.
“Shoprite can confirm that a robbery took place at its LiquorShop branch in Phillipi Mall (yesterday) morning. Staff members were not injured and the police are investigating. To Shoprite’s knowledge, no arrests have yet been made,” Van Wyk said.
However, police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said they have no record of the matter.
“Philippi police station has no record of a robbery at Philippi Mall (yesterday),” he says.
The business robbery comes after Clicks in Vangate Mall was robbed on Sunday when four robbers marched into the store while customers were still inside.
The thugs held up employees at gunpoint before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
And in recent weeks, an MTN store at Vangate Mall (October 20), a Spur restaurant in Voortrekker Road, Goodwood (November 14) and a KFC restaurant in Rosmead Centre (18 November) were also raided by robbers.
