While the Springboks will not have an official vice captain for tomorrow’s series decider against Ireland in Port Elizabeth at 5pm, Warren Whiteley might get the chance to wear the national team’s armband.
Coach Allister Coetzee has been reluctant to name a deputy for captain Adriaan Strauss throughout the series, with his flyhalf Elton Jantjies marshalling the troops in the backline.
But when pressed for an answer on who will wear the captain’s armband in the event of Strauss leaving the field, Coetzee reveals that he will hand the reins to Lions leader Whiteley, who will also wear the Springboks’ No.8 jumper for the first time after injury ruled out Duane Vermeulen.
Coetzee says: “If anything should happen to Adriaan, then I’ll give Warren Whiteley [the armband].”
If Strauss does leave the field, Stormers hooker Bongi Mbonambi will receive his first Test cap after sitting on the bench throughout the first two Tests.
Mbonambi is one of three possible debutants on the bench, the others being former Cape prop Steven Kitshoff and Lions star Jaco Kriel.
