The provincial semi-final ended on a high note yesterday when only these singers impressed the judges enough to go through to the finals, taking place in September.
It was a tie between Elsies River’s Edmonte Wesso, 23, and Sive Makreqa, 21, from Langa.
The event took place at the Megavue Theatre at Ratanga Junction yesterday.
The competition is now in its 11th year and Top Stars producer, Afrikaans singing legend Mynie Grove, says it just keeps getting better.
“People are getting serious about this competition,” she tells the Daily Voice.
“Cape Town is the bread basket of talent in South Africa and some of that talent form part of the Shoprite Group.”
TV presenter Katlego Maboe was the MC and showed off his own vocal talents, belting out Ed Sheeran’s hit Shape of You.
The 14 semi-finalists from all over the Western Cape brought their A-game, some even showing off their kwaai dance moves.
There was loud applause from their colleagues, all proudly dressed in their Shoprite and Checkers uniforms, and armed with vuvuzelas and posters to cheer on their favourites.
Last year’s winner Mahadi Tsokolibane proved why she won the title when she performed Chaka Kahn’s I’m Every Woman in front of the crowd of hundreds.
Sive blew the crowd away when he sang Jealous by Labrinth and had mense screaming at the top of their lungs when he dramatically fell down to his knees, still singing.
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Edmonte melted hearts with John Legend’s Ordinary People.
Edmonte is an admin clerk for Bolt Distribution Centre in Montague Gardens and Sive is a cashier at Checkers store in De Grendel.
The grand finale of Top Stars will take place at the GrandWest Grand Arena on 21 September.
