The Broadway theme for this year’s Diva’s One Night Only show was a real showstopper.
The Joseph Stone Auditorium was the place to be on Saturday night as MCs Nathan Kayser and Heart FM’s Irma G introduced the 15 acts on stage.
One of the show’s organiser’s Errol Stroebel says the sold-out crowd enjoyed every minute.
He says: “Joining the seasoned cabaret artists were beauty pageant drag artists and newcomers to the cabaret stage.”
Stroebel himself also made a return to the stage and was in fine voice.
He says: “I was back with a duet which I performed with Tiara Skye. We had the audience singing along to our performance of Beauty And The Beast.”
And familiar faces, like drag pageant Belinda QaQamba Kafassie, also took to the Diva’s stage to have their moment in the spotlight.
Errol’s partner and fellow organiser Kat Gilardi from 3D says this year she wanted to do something different.
“This year I felt the importance of being more involved in the performance part of the show and sharing the stage with all the artists,” says Kat.
Diva Manila von Teez had everyone on their feet with Beyonce’s hit song Formation, while Gabriella Sofia Garcia, with a feathered fan and lots of attitude, performed Queen Latifa’s When You’re Good to Mama.
Laylah Raja Novacek tugged on everyone’s heartstrings when she paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando, USA mass shooting, in which 49 people died at a gay nightclub.
Errol says he is proud of all the performers.
“Tiara, Angel and Kat, received a standing ovation. Kat says this year she felt the divas had more of a united spirit together and this is what cabaret is all about, educating people and at the same time entertaining them with the art form of women impersonation.”
